A Valentine’s Day campaign launch - ‘Bouquet Tags That Care’ as part of our #ReduceFlowerWaste and #PlasticFreeFlowers focus through this last fortnight, trying to ensure that our flowers do not burden the planet!

We are happy to be partnering with the @growersflowercouncilofindia and @indiafloristassociation to bring sustainable practices in the flower industry. Grateful to @srikantkanoi helping us take this to the floral community and stakeholders.

Our immediate focus: solve the problem of beautiful flowers generating methane in landfills due to improper disposal. Sadly, most people are not aware that plastic sheets on flowers are banned, or that this is responsible for methane generation when flowers rot in mixed waste in landfill. Therefore, any wrapping must be segregated before disposing.

Our unique solution: a bouquet tag on every bouquet sold by every florist in every city with clear disposal instructions on the back. The tags are multi-purpose - they are instruments in the fight to reduce waste, they are keepsakes of a special occasion, and become beautiful bookmarks too!

We have taken first steps and launched our fun V-Day Series One, declaring love not just for the recipient of the bouquet but for the planet too, ensuring #PlasticFreeFlowers and careful disposal too. Through campaign partners and conscious citizens who create awareness via their florists, family and friends network, we hope to spread awareness. Series 2, 3... for bouquets for other occasions to follow; let us know in the comments what occasions you’d specifically like bouquet tags for.

We are glad that through our partners @growersflowercouncilofindia & @indiafloristassociation that we are able to put these tags out on bouquets across the country, literally in the hands of those who receive the flowers, with useful input that can drive the change on the ground.

This Valentine's Day, we're excited to be partnering with the @growersflowercouncilofindia and @indiafloristassociation to bring sustainable practices to the flower industry. This takes our efforts since 2017 to #ReduceFlowerWaste with #PlasticFreeFlowers a notch higher, as we try to ensure that our flowers do not burden the planet, working through their extensive network across the country.

Thank you @srikantkanoi for helping drive this forward with the floral community and stakeholders.

Our first aim: solve the problem of all those once beautiful flowers generating methane in landfills due to improper disposal. That can happen if florists and customers dispose of bouquets after careful segregation, and also bouquets use less nonbiodegradable materials and instead shift to reusable, recyclable or zero packaging for flowers.

Through this partnership, we hope to make it easier for florists across the country to become aware of:
1. What packaging on bouquets is okay and what is better avoided
2. What is the correct way to dispose of flower waste which can avoid mixed waste in landfills
3. Ways to create awareness on disposal among their customers through our 'Bouquet tags that care' with disposal instructions on the reverse (and reusable as a book mark, also a memento of a special occasion)
4. Making flowers last longer - because that reduces the carbon footprint with more longevity for the flowers, higher return on the resources spent to grow them.

Through our valueable alliance with those from the flower industry, other conscious groups and citizens who create awareness via their florists, family and friends network, we hope to spread awareness and bring change.

Reeth Abraham, champion athlete, is now also championing environmental causes and supports our #PlasticFreeFlowers campaign.

This reel on reusing paper bags could save huge amounts of our planet's resources if more people watched and said hey, that's so true and decided to start doing what we suggest - REUSE PAPER BAGS!

Too many paper bags are piling up in homes because most deliveries have shifted from plastic to paper. Many believe this is a great step, but wait – paper comes from trees, so isn't it a precious resource to be used prudently? 🤔 Instead we see it used for disposing wet waste or sanitary waste, so it can't even be recycled. Ideally reduce use of paper bags and avoid it altogether but if you have them, please reuse first, then once torn, recycle in Dry Waste.

Meanwhile on our streets, plastic bags are too many, so join our Reuse Paper Bag campaign and help impact both problems of too many paper bags and too many plastic bags with a simple solution: collect and reuse.

Paper bags are not meant to be single-use.So let’s get those bags we end up into reuse circulation by passing them on to street vendors, as we transition to sustainable habits of Reduce – Reuse – Recycle.

Lalbagh flowershow - behind the scenes.
Briefing guards:

Our intervention at Lalbagh over the years aims to make it a litterfree, plasticfree, spitfree premises, not just during the flowershow but year round.

Especially during the flowershow, preventing banned items from entering the premises is therefore essential.

The security staff on the premises need to understand what they are to check, what is not allowed, etc

Apart from gate checks for vendors, this is a crucial factor for visitors too, and the guards spread across the premises play a role in addressing this.

So like every year, our Co-founder @odettekatrak briefs the guards (also the marshalls and lady guards) to ensure that they all fully understand their duties, what is banned so they could identify it and address is appropriately.

Reducing public spitting being another stated objective by the Director of Horticulture, which also ties in with our #StopIndiaSpitting movement. So she had explained this angle as well to the guards, something not generally considered a problem but important to make it clear that public spitting is no longer acceptable.

Students of the Titan school, Hosur came out in full force with a 100+ students to create awareness and a buzz at the Lalbagh Flowershow.

We started with a briefing by @odettekatrak which the teachers said inspired them to adopt environment conservation habits and become ambassadors for our planet.

Among the messages they learnt, discussed and further chanted about were:
- Spitting spreads disease, no spitting please, let's #StopIndiaSpitting! They learnt to chant it in many different languages!
- NoBalloonsPlease - one student said she never knew balloons were harmful and would stop using them and spread the message among her friends
- they understood how to reduce waste by carrying reusables instead of disposables, and would strictly say no to plastic.

Children joining our movement brings great hope, because they are the future. And our Lalbagh intervention has extra meaning with students coming in every year, adding to awareness building messages that bring attention to our key messages.

What usually happens the morning after celebrations - this time Republic Day? This picture gives us one more reason to give up balloons - the litter!

Look on your streets this coming week, you’ll be sure to spot balloon fragments in many corners, because they are not easy to sweep so escape the cleaners’ brooms. To share the past context, our #NoBalloonsPlease campaign has got much support across the country with the noise level having increased in the last 2 years, since we first flagged this in 2018. So many influencers speaking about it is a really good thing, and over 75 groups across the country have lent support.

The result: there is slow awareness increasing and many communities have shifted away from earlier default balloons to cloth, paper or flower decorations. Now that's an amazing development that has to become the new trend!

The campaign continues to create awareness, so that the next event, be it a birthday, wedding or any other, at home, office or anywhere, can once again be celebrated with decorations that are earth-friendly.

This poster of our Bellandur Lake made several years ago captures the reality of what can happen if we as citizens do not discharge our responsibilities.

Cleaner cities and a greener environment are indeed possible if we, the generators of waste, reduce the amount we send out, both by cutting out disposables and segregating the waste carefully. This increases chances of recycling and reduces mixed waste to landfill or pollution to our water bodies.

As proud Indians, our celebrations make this day special. It is also a time to remember that plastic flags are banned, cloth flags are better and littering flags of any kind must be avoided. Let us show respect by reusing flags rather than discarding them. This poster was created in 2017 as a specific request to us, because littering of flags post the celebrations was common then. More awareness has brought more consciousness and we continue to encourage all Indians to celebrate with pride and responsibility.

This struggling barn owl actually hung for 3 hours from a string in which it wing got tangled before it could be rescued. It varied between desperate fluttering or just hanging, literally 'by a thread' caught in a branch of a tree.

It could have been a helium balloon string or a hydrogen balloon string. It could have been a kite manja. The point is not what it was, but that it trapped a bird because of careless celebrations and entertainment by humans somewhere else - because often the balloon or kite flies much further away and the damage is done at a location far away trapping innocent creatures.

This owl was lucky and could get rescued, but how many millions of birds, turtles and more suffer and die a slow painful death. This owl was released after rehabilitation once its wing injury healed, thanks to Animal and Reptile Rehabilitation Centre's prompt attention.

As part of Beautiful Bharat's #NoBalloonsPlease campaign, we are highlighting the many reasons why balloons are no longer appropriate to use in today's stressed environment, and also the alternatives that can be used instead, with earth-friendly celebrations and decorations that are kind to the planet and all its creatures. What goes up must come down, so what happens to those balloons after release on Republic Day?

We are privileged to have this amazing portrayal specially created for the #NoBalloonsPlease movement by a talented student supporter Adhya Viswanatha Marulappar, a Grade 11 student of Greenwood High. She connected to say that she wished to do something useful during her school break, and here’s what she came up with!

A powerful way to show that our celebrations could have consequences that impact our environment, depending on the choices we make. We're showing you the consequences 'after' scenes first, and then the 'before', when the tricolour release happens.

At a time of national pride, yes perhaps we do need to rethink how we celebrate to ensure that it is indeed a happy day for all. Those tricolour balloons going joyfully up into the air on national days have definite consequences on animals and marine life in days and weeks thereafter. So we ask for all communities to rethink and celebrate without balloons.

Textile waste is a huge issue for our cities, and in tune with this theme, here's our 2018 poster when we introduced the concept of cloth buntings made from waste fabric discarded by tailors - a good idea indeed but not heard of at the time! This does not just divert waste from landfills but also replaces single-use or non-biodegradable balloons or plastic flags, and buntings are truly a sustainable solution.

Truly #IdeasWorthTrying! And happy to be connected with teams like @hasiru_dala that are doing great work in this area.

At sn individual level too, you could start connecting with tailors in your area. Ask them to make buntings and help them connect with buyers. Or collect scraps to make all kinds of useful items, coloured buntings for different occasions.

Almost a hundred students of Sishu Griha joined us at the Lalbagh Flowershow today to speak up for our key campaigns that help us to make this a Beautiful Bengaluru, a Beautiful Bharat and of course a Beautiful Planet.
They took a pledge to reduce waste by carrying own bags, bottles and segregate waste.

If not balloons, then what people ask? Paper decorations are fun to make and great for the environment! Cloth or flowers look amazing too, and we can upcycle, reuse, recycle or compost.

As we prepare to celebrate Republic Day and honour our Mother India, let us not forget to honour our Mother Earth too. Let's ensure that we have green celebrations, and our decorations have no banned plastic flags, but one step better - #NoBalloonsPlease, because though they are pretty, they are also pretty harmful.

Please also sign and share our petition to push for change in use of balloons in our celebrations, with the hope that we can end harmful balloon releases - because those same balloons harm birds and sea creatures once they reach land or water. Our Co-founder @odettekatrak has been a passionate 'Water Saver' for decades and has been spreading awareness on simple ways to save water, and is well-known for her #3mugbath! Her views in this full page article on aerators by Mini Thomas in @toibengaluru of 18th January 2025 are therefore relevant.

Our Beautiful Bharat 'Save Water' campaign encourages year-round efforts to save every drop, not just during summer water shortages. It focuses on recalibration of daily practices that do make a significant impact, especially at the household level. And we believe through all our campaigns, that small steps do add up for big impact.

Odette has pulled in individual habits into this article on aerators, reinforcing that while such external fixtures are a must for significant water saving, awareness and responsible consumption at the individual level also are much needed.
